About the Company
Our mission is to help professionals write well. Our college-level
report writing texts are tailored to individuals in criminal justice, law enforcement,
fire services, public safety, corrections and
private security. They are used in colleges and universities, police
academies and departments, and correctional facilities throughout the
country. Our publications have received national
acclaim for over 30 years and are priced competitively.
Innovative Systems - Publishers, Inc., produces report writing textbooks
and tutorials and conducts customized, on-site workshops for law
enforcement, fire services, public safety, private security and
corrections. The company was founded in 1984 in California for the
expressed purpose of keeping in print the textbook, For the Record:
Report Writing in Law Enforcement, originally published in 1978 by
John Wiley. In
1999 it changed ownership, bringing it back to Minnesota, the home of
the primary authors.
Our Authors
Kären M. Hess, PhD
|
Dr. Kären M. Hess enjoys national recognition as an author and
teacher in law enforcement communication. During the past
30 years she has authored or co-authored more than 20 college texts.
She has earned doctorates in English and Criminal Justice and has
lectured extensively in writing, editing and communications.

Christine Hess Orthmann, MS
|
Ms. Orthmann holds a bachelor’s
degree from the University of Minnesota and a master’s degree
from Nova Southeastern University. She has been the key
researcher and writer for numerous law enforcement textbooks
over the past 20 years and is the owner of Orthmann Writing and
Research, Inc. She is also a reserve officer with the Rosemount
(Minnesota) Police Department.

Floyd T. Stokes,

Floyd Stokes,
Chief of Police, Blue Lake, has had an extensive career in military and civilian law
enforcement, including: U.S. Naval Intelligence, Naval Investigative
Service, District Attorney Criminal Investigator, Police Chief, Resident
Deputy Sheriff and K-9 handler. He holds AA and BS degrees and teaches effective writing workshops
at the College of the Redwoods.

Henry M.
Wrobleski, LLB, (1922-2007)
|
Henry Wrobleski was coordinator of the
law enforcement program at Normandale Community College. He was a respected author,
lecturer and consultant with over 40 years of experience in law
enforcement. He held an LLB degree and was a graduate of the FBI Academy.

David Sanderlin, PhD
|
|
Dr. David Sanderlin, former professor of
English and chair of the English Department at Miramar College in San
Diego, earned his BA degree from UCLA and his MA and PhD degrees from
the University of Notre Dame. He has published commercial and scholarly
articles, pamphlets, and books in the area of college writing. He has
also worked with the Police and Sheriff Academies at Miramar College in
the report writing component of their programs. Although retired from
teaching, Dr. Sanderlin continues writing and submitting manuscripts.
